What a Week
March 12th, 2009
Apparently being Slashdotted has a lingering effect, as other website and blogs pick up the story. My blog post has been mentioned in quite a few sites and blogs over the last couple of days. I was quite excited to see it show up in a couple of big iPhone sites:
- PocketGamer (www.pocketgamer.co.uk) – These guys are a pretty huge mobile games site covering all kinds of portable gaming devices, and they do a lot of great coverage of iPhone games. I was excited to see them mention my blog.
- MobileOrchard (www.mobileorchard.com) – You might remember that MobileOrchard published my Memory Leak Tracking tutorial. I really like this site, as it has lots of great iPhone dev information on it, so I was happy to see them pick up the story.
I also want to thank everyone who posted words of encouragement on my previous blog post, or who wrote me emails directly. It does mean a lot to me that other developers are finding this information useful. I still haven’t decided how to handle this kind of information in the future, but I’m remaining open to the idea of being open and honest with my data.

Owen,
I think that your stats posts was interesting and insightful, and I am staggered at some of the negative responses that you got.
I can only imagine that those were from people who did not understand a) what you were trying to achieve and b) the thought processes of a small business owner.
I congratulate you on the blog, and very much hope that you will keep giving us this insight.
And I covered the story at my site focused on the business of games (http://www.gamesbrief.com/2009/03/revealing-stats-from-the-indie-developer-of-dapple-for-iphone/).

Owen,
I’d also like to thank you for being so open about your experiences whilst developing Dapple. I am myself considering throwing in my lot for the dream of becoming a small scale games developer and this kind of information has really helped me think realistically in a climate where the only stories your read are about out-of-nowhere hits like Rollando.
I wish you all success in the future and am sure that if you stick with it and learn from your experiences then you will be able to make a go of it in this tricky market.
