This is what I’m talking about

I mentioned Little Big Planet a week or two ago in a post about games as a medium for creation. This may not be art (maybe it is), but someone took the time to build a working calculator using LBP:
- Little Big Planet Calculator (www.kotaku.com) – Watch the video right the way through. It doesn’t look that impressive until you see the work that went into the machine…

Webpages and colds
Tuesday, October 7th, 2008
Well, the cold I caught last week really knocked me on my ass. I haven’t had a cold in over two years and I’d forgotten how much they suck. I attribute my good luck with colds in past years to the fact that I was walking 45 minutes a day on my commute to and from work. Now that my commute is all of 20 seconds, I’m just not getting as much exercise. I’ve started looking into climbing gyms in Toronto, as I used to do that a lot, but somehow fell out of the habit of going. I’m looking to get back into it now, if only for the fact that it’ll get me out of the house every couple of days.
I’m continuing work on the company logo. I think I’m somewhere around iteration 87 or so (seriously) and I feel like I’ve almost got it. The most recent changes are small tweaks and changes in the way the font looks.
My goal for this week is to get the new site design up and running. At the very least I should get the home page skinned in the new design. The blog may be a little more tricky, as I haven’t played around with WordPress’s CSS and templates yet. It should be fun, as I haven’t done any HTML coding in a long time.
So, while I don’t feel quite back to normal yet from this damn cold, it’s time to crack open Vim and start plugging away at this HTML stuff. Wish me luck!

Progress

So here’s the state of things: I’ve got a prototype that I enjoy playing and other people enjoy playing too. The feedback I’ve been getting is mostly around balance issues and user interface issues. To this point I haven’t really concerned myself with balance and interface as I was mostly trying to get the prototype playable and determine whether or not it would make a good game. Given that it’s only a prototype, those issues I can take care of when I start working on the game proper. This pleases me.
The work I’ve been doing on my company logo is coming along. It’s been an exhausting task, but one that I’ve also enjoyed quite a bit. Art/design isn’t my primary area of expertise, but I do have some background in it. It also helps to have a lot of friends and family in the art/design field who I can show ideas to and get feedback. I think I’m narrowing it down and I should have something that I’m happy with next week.
Once I’ve got a logo nailed down I’ll be updating the design of the website. For the site itself I had a friend, who actually is a graphic designer, put something together for me. I’m just going to have to actually code it up. Hopefully I’ll start on that next week. It’s been a long while since I wrote any HTML or CSS, so it may be a bit of a struggle, but a friend of mine, who is a web developer, has offered to help me if I get stuck. He even helped me get started with a roughed out version of the home page. Thank goodness for friends!
So things are moving along…and then I went and got sick. It’s just a cold, but it’s making me feel crummy. At any rate, I’m taking today off in the hopes that I’ll heal faster if I don’t force myself to work today. Er…except for posting this, that is.
